Paul D. Zak:  About Me

I have been doing counseling and psychotherapy for over 30 years, and have worked with individuals, couples and relationship issues, and psychotherapeutic groups.

My early years as a clinical social worker were spent working in crisis and community mental health clinics. I have had my own private psychotherapy practice since 1995, first in San Francisco, and now in Palm Springs. I work with diverse clientele, both gay/lesbian and straight. As a trained psychotherapist, I help people with issues such as depression and anxiety, career transitions, midlife and aging, intimacy and relationship concerns, HIV concerns, as well as substance abuse/dependence.

I give workshops in Palm Springs. My workshops include: Depression, Anxiety, Codependence in Relationships, Building Intimacy, Communication in Intimate Relationships, the Enneagram and Couples, Gay Male Midlife, and Sprituality. I also taught for the Psychiatry Department of Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco (Depression and Anxiety), and trained alcohol and drug counselors through the West Coast Institute of Addiction Studies in San Francisco.

I have also presented at various local, national, and international conferences. I obtained my Social Work degree from San Francisco State University in 1992, and my license as a Clinical Social Worker in 1995 (LCS 17633). I did additional coursework post-license to earn the Certified Addictions Specialist credential (CAS 3582) in 1996. I am certified in treating alcohol, drug, and sex addiction. I became a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (BCD 50356) in 2004. This credential signifies advanced clinical skills in psychotherapy.

Prior to social work, as a former Roman Catholic priest, I did pastoral counseling for many years, largely on university campuses and in hospital settings. I have degrees in theology and pastoral ministry, Spirituality, very broadly defined, is of interest to me and I enjoy working with clients who wish to integrate their emotional and spiritual lives.

I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the California Society for Clinical Social Work (CSCSW), and The California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT).

I have served as Co-President of Gaylesta (The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender Psychotherapist Association of the Bay Area), Co-Chair of the Palm Springs Unit of NASW, and member of the Board of Directors of the Desert Pride Community Center in Palm Springs.
